The current Field Trip Experience requires approximately 1 ½ hours. Your class may be divided into smaller touring groups and rotate between the exhibitions and/or activities. Trip must be arranged two weeks prior to the trip date.

Field Trip Experiences are free to students from the McMinn County School District and the Athens City School District. For all other school districts and home school programs, there is a $1 charge per student. There is no charge for teachers and for each adult chaperone. Museum guidelines state that there is to be at least one (1) chaperone for every ten (10) students. Additional adults are $5 each.

  • Traveling Trunks: The Living Heritage Museum currently provides nine Traveling Trunks to educators throughout McMinn County to use in addition to their class work by integrating the study of American history using artifacts, historical photographs, books, videos, and hands-on activities that can be adapted for any grade level.
  • Museum in the Classroom: Off-site classroom lessons related to the Museum’s core story, collections, and exhibitions presented by members of the professional staff and volunteers are available throughout the year. Call the Museum to discuss your individual interest and learning goals, and we can tailor a program for your class. Program times are flexible, and we may be able to accommodate special requests.
  • Programs at the Museum: Since 1988, the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum has produced educational programs for area students in which children and educators get the opportunity to interact with presenters. The Living Heritage Museums school programs give students a lesson in McMinn County heritage they can't get out of any textbook, because here at the Museum, history lessons come alive. Artisans that present hands-on demonstrations are placed strategically throughout the Museum, and students rotate through to each station.
  • Museum Tours: The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum is fast becoming one of the premiere destinations for school groups of all ages. From preschool-aged children to college students, the Museum is a rewarding experience for all educational initiatives. Our Field Trip Experiences combines art and history and can be geared for students of all ages and grade levels.
  • Archeology Dig: The Museum Curator will show your students what archeology is really all about. Most everyone knows who Indiana Jones is and that archeology can be really exciting, but we want to show students that “X” does not always mark the spot. Archeology is also science, and that there are certain procedures if you want to record discoveries for the future so that other people can learn from them too.

Field Trip Experiences are available year-round, Monday through Friday, during Museum hours (10 a.m.-5 p.m.). Please note some galleries are closed periodically for exhibition installation.
